Toyota Unintended Acceleration Recall
Nearly 4 million North American Toyota & Lexus Vehicles Affected
Floormats Lead to Dangerous and Unexpected Acceleration
Many owners of late model Toyota or Lexus vehicles will be receiving a recall notice in the mail to address a serious and potentially deadly problem where their car's floormat could get jammed under the accelerator pedal, causing it to "stick," which leads to unexpected and dangerous acceleration.
Unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles may have been involved in the deaths of 89 people over the past decade.
Scary Complaints Start Pouring In
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that from 2000 to mid-May, it had received more than 6,200 complaints involving sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles.
Similarly, the CarComplaints.com network started receiving numerous first-hand accounts and photos regarding the issue.
"As I applied the brakes prior to reaching the cement parking stop I heard and felt a quick surge from the engine. My first thought was to hit the brake and try to get the transmission in park. No way! The car quickly jumped the cement parking stop like a bucking bull."
